When riding a scooter in Shanghai, China …

It’s no longer about obeying the law if a gas-powdered tricycle hauling garbage bags (but no garbage) that is wide & difficult to pass in the scooter lane passes you while you wait for the light to turn green.

Our expat friends at church call it ‘going local’ which is the Chinese way of saying, ‘when in Rome, do as the Romans do’. When ‘going local’, you usually do something in a way that is less than or below your usual Standard of behavior. In some cases ‘going local’ is a matter of survival such as while riding a scooter in crazy Chinese traffic. Other times we fight the tendency to rudely cut people off getting on or off the subway or generally wearing blinders to the needs of those around us.

And sometimes we choose to ‘go local’ purely because a gas-powdered tricycle hauling garbage bags (but no garbage) that is wide & difficult to pass in the scooter lane is not allowed to pass you while you wait for the light to turn green!!

I struggled with "going local" in Missouri. I just couldn't do it for the most part if that meant lowering a moral standard. But, when it comes to traffic laws...well, I'd probably do that too!
